Early Equip Graduate Earns M.Div.

By Maddie Willis

In May 2024, Rich Gould became one of two BMAC majors to attain a graduate degree as he graduated from Harding School of Theology with his master of divinity (M.Div.). Equip — Bible Online proudly congratulates Rich on his accomplishments.

Rich is not only a member of the Equip family, but also a father, husband, and faithful servant of the Lord. Commenting on Equip — Bible Online, Rich mentioned that “it helped me to gain a greater quality education while life was still going on at work, as dad, and husband.” The flexibility he had with his professors made the process of getting his education enjoyable rather than a box marked off a checklist.

Although Rich praised the flexibility of the program, he emphasized quality of education he received in his time with Equip, especially with his faculty: “I still remember classes like Greek with Dr. Robertson; Dr. Youngblood teaching Biblical Theology. These awesome scholars you have working with you makes it all the more helpful,” Rich said. He added that this type of quality, as well as the community Equip offers, go hand-in-hand.

“There was always a sense of trying to connect as a community,” according to Rich. There was a period of his program where he had the opportunity to come to campus for five weeks during the summer. Although there were challenges with a relocation for this length of time, Rich felt support from people close to him. When asked about these challenges, Rich commented on his family life first. “It was hard for my wife because we had a two-and-a-half year-old as well as a six-month-old,” he said. “Even with this, the Equip community helped me. It is important to note that from the Equip community, I have gained some great friendships– life long friendships that I will forever cherish.”

In addition to the community aspect, Rich was willing to delve into his spiritual life throughout his educational journey. As Rich entered this program, he was searching for his purpose in life. He had been medically retired from the military for a while and was given the ability to stay at home with his children. Although he was grateful, both he and his wife felt God’s plan had not yet come into full effect. At times Rich questioned why he was doing everything he was. He would just tell himself– “I know the knowledge I’m gaining is good, but it’s about how it’s forming me more into the image of Christ.” Even in the late nights studying relentlessly over Greek, he would remind himself to slow down and take his time. “Doing this helped me learn to read Scripture differently, think about it differently, and speak to others differently.”

Rich was offered a job in August as a Bible teacher for 8-12th grade students. He is now using what he learned to benefit his students and to grow God’s kingdom.

When asked what advice he would give to those going through the Equip program like he did, he said. “Slow down. Allow the classes to shape you; form you more into the image of Christ.” He stressed how patience is a virtue and a necessity throughout these formative times. Rich learned that no matter how life might be going now that it’s important to trust in God. “The real formation happens in the waiting,” rich learned.

We are proud to see Rich complete his M.Div. from Harding School of Theology! And we are thankful that his path overlap with ours as he prepared for this achievement.
